Vehicle crime hotspots revealed

Insurance experts have analysed data from the Office of National Statistics to discover the vehicle crime hotspots in England and Wales.
More than 97,000 vehicle crimes were reported across 172 local authorities between April 2023 and March 2024.
Temporary car insurance provider Tempcover has studied the data and found that 23 local authorities with the highest vehicle crime rates are boroughs of London. This may be due to urban density, high traffic, and population size.
In contrast, rural areas in Wales experience fewer vehicle crimes.
When focusing on the capital, Haringey, Camden, and Islington were found to have the highest vehicle crime rates. Haringey was ranked first with 12,6 offences per million vehicle miles and a total of 4,008 total vehicle offences were recorded for the year 2023-24.
Camden followed with a vehicle crime rate of 11.25 offences per million vehicle miles and over 3,079 vehicle offences recorded between the year 2023-24, with Islington ranked third (9.98 offences per million vehicle miles and 2,251 vehicle offences).
Claire Wills-Mckissick from Tempcover, said:
“Both drivers and local authorities have an important role to play in reducing vehicle crime. Drivers can minimise the risk of theft by parking in secure locations, using anti-theft devices, and staying vigilant. Local authorities can make a difference by increasing police presence, improving CCTV surveillance, and raising public awareness. Together, these efforts can help reduce vehicle crime.”
