Automotive apprenticeship numbers set to rise by 16%

Automotive apprenticeship numbers are expected to grow by almost a sixth during 2025, according to a survey carried out by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
It found that employers are investing in a major skills drive to help the industry gear up for what it calls a ‘green growth decade’.
At the start of National Apprenticeship Week 2025 (10-16 February), the SMMT research has revealed that more than £20bn of investment has been committed to Britain’s EV transition in the past two years alone, which has created higher demand for new skills.
To bridge this gap, it found that more than 550 new apprentices have joined the sector this academic year alone, with an additional 740 apprenticeships still available.
It is now predicting that apprenticeship numbers will increase by 16% in 2025, building on a 40.8% rise in numbers during 2023.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “Britain’s automotive sector is on the cusp of a ‘green growth decade’ with billions being invested in EVs and, crucially, in a new generation of talent to design, build and maintain them.
“There is little doubt that automotive is one of the world’s most exciting industries and, as we seek growth, we need new-skilled apprentices that can grow with us. Our promise is well-paid, rewarding careers for years to come.”
