‘Crash-for-cash’ scams spike in Bristol
Bristol has seen a spike in the number of crash-for-cash incidents involving mopeds, according to new data released by Ageas.
The scam involves mopeds being moved into the path of reversing vehicles – often vans – to create a collision so riders can claim compensation for damages and injuries.
The insurer first warned of this type of crash-for-cash tactic in the summer of 2023, but has seen a 190% surge in cases in Bristol recently.
Katie Davies, director of underwriting services and fraud at Ageas, said: “Our fraud intelligence team has seen a significant rise in this crash-for-cash scam in Bristol and other large urban centres.
“We would like to warn drivers to be aware of the tell-tale signs of faked accidents as this can help them avoid falling victim to this continuing scam. We urge everyone to stay vigilant on the roads and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.”
It is urging drivers who are victims of this type of fraud to capture as many details as possible of the moped rider and their vehicle, and to take pictures of any damage caused.
Further, it says drivers should not admit liability for the incident and contact both their insurer and the Insurance Fraud Bureau’s Cheatline.
