Apprenticeships increasingly popular among school leavers

Apprenticeship Central has revealed that 46% of school leavers now regard apprenticeships as a viable career option.

Apprenticeship Central relaunched earlier this month to deliver bespoke recruitment and retention solutions for UK bodyshops.

It found that in the last 12 months nearly half of young people leaving school considered apprenticeships to be a realistic option to university, debunking the myth that university is the overwhelming option for school leavers.

It also found that, based on government data, the percentage of employees who are apprentices rose for the academic year 2023/24, with those under the age of 19 accounting for 32.7% of new starters.

Apprenticeships retention

Meanwhile, retention rates are also higher than many believe, with 85% of apprentices remaining with their employer once they qualify.

Director of Apprenticeship Central, Eleanor Baker-Barnes said: “We already know that good, well supported apprenticeship programmes deliver outstanding value.  The difficult part for employers is finding the time and expertise to design and deliver them.  Outsourcing to the experienced team at Apprenticeship Central means you can get on with running your business while we look after your apprentices.

These statistics highlight the increased appetite of school leavers for apprenticeships and underscores that overwhelming numbers stay with the original employers.”
