UK used car buyers victims of mileage fraud
New research by CarVertical has found that nearly 160,000 UK used car buyers could be victims of mileage fraud this year.
About 1.9 million used cars are bought and sold every quarter in the UK, with CarVertical’s data suggesting that 2.1% of these vehicles have clocked mileage.
Lowering a vehicle’s mileage falsely can increase its sale price by up to 25%.
Used cars under five years old are not immune either, with data indicating that 1.89% of vehicles in this category have mileage discrepancies. Mileage rollbacks are most common on brands such as Kia (nine per cent), Nissan (6.84%) and Dacia (6.16%).
Matas Buzelis, a car expert at car history-checking service carVertical, said:
“Mileage is a key indicator of vehicle wear, but even newer cars with low mileage may have been tampered with.”
