UK’s most dangerous areas to drive revealed

The most dangerous areas to drive outside of London have been revealed in new research.

According to a new study by Vignette Switzerland based on historical data from Department for Transport, Blackpool is the area with the highest number of average collisions per billion vehicle miles driven.

It topped the rankings with 976 collisions per billion miles driven between 2018 and 2023, ahead of Hull with 943.

The Isles of Scilly was third with an average of 936 collisions, although that spiked to 2,199 last year. Also in the top ten was Luton (856), Brighton and Hove (851), Southampton (781), Reading (748), Blackburn with Darwen (734), Nottingham (722), and Liverpool (678).

Across the whole of the UK, the research found that the overall average was 335 collisions per billion miles driven.

M.E. Wijnmalen, CEO, said:

“These findings highlight the importance of prioritising road safety measures, especially in areas with higher collision rates. While it’s not guaranteed to have a collision driving through any of these areas, you must prioritise your own safety on the road as much as anyone else’s. This is especially important with winter coming up, which is expected to change certain driving experiences across the UK drastically.”
