New survey reveals UK’s best and worst roads

The best and worst roads according to UK drivers have been revealed in a new study.

Undertaken by independent watchdog Transport Focus, the annual Strategic Roads User Survey asked 9,000 motorists to rank their best and worst motorways and A roads.

Bottom of the list was the M42, which was ranked as the worst motorway in England. It scored 56% for overall satisfaction from road users, with respondents citing the significant period of roadworks around Birmingham airport.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the M40 motorway had the highest overall satisfaction at 79% per cent, although its overall score fell from 82% satisfaction rate last year.

Meanwhile, the M5, dropped from 82% to 77%.

In terms of A roads, the A19 was rated the best in England with the highest overall satisfaction at 85% while the A12 received the lowest overall satisfaction rating from road users with just 55%.

The survey also questioned drivers about their satisfaction levels with their most recent journey, and found that overall levels fell from 73% to 71%, with satisfaction in the quality of the road surface dropping from 73% to 68%.
