BMW issues global recall of 1.5 million cars

BMW Group is recalling more than 1.5 million cars because of a fault with their braking system.

Models affected include the BMW X1, X3, X4, X5, X6, and X7 SUVs, the 5 and 7 Series saloons, and the electric iX1, i5 and i7.

Certain New Mini Cooper and Countryman models are also included in the global recall, which includes models produced in the UK, Germany, France, the US, and South Korea.

As well as the recalls, BMW has also put deliveries of up to 320,000 of these models on hold until the work has been carried out. This is likely to mean month-long delays.

The fault is caused by the Integrated Braking System (IBS), which controls brake pressure and can result in the need for increased pedal force while braking. The faulty component was supplied by Continental and could lead to brake issues in three to five per cent of the affected models.

BMW has said it is replacing the IBS in all affected vehicles.

The recall is expected to cost a ‘high three-digit million euro amount’ in the third quarter alone and has seen BMW shares fall eight per cent.
