IGA identifies new opportunities for independent repairers

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has said the changing face of the UK car parc plus growing car usage presents significant opportunities for repairers.

Data from the Department of Transport has revealed that while usage of public transport has not recovered since Covid-19, private car usage has not just returned to pre-pandemic levels but exceeded it.

Meanwhile, the cost-of-living crisis means motorists are now hanging on to their cars for longer, with data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) finding that the average car in the UK is now 10 years old. It predicts this average will increase further due to a fall in new car sales.

As a consequence, the IGA has identified significant areas of opportunities for repairers.

It believes demand will increase across the country for service and maintenance to extend vehicle lifespan, and predicts demand to be even greater in rural areas where public transport usage is particularly low.

Stuart James, chief executive of the IGA, said:

“The latest data from the Department of Transport highlights a critical shift in how the public is choosing to travel post-pandemic. The sustained increase in car usage presents a significant opportunity for the independent garage sector. As more people rely on their personal vehicles, the demand for maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle care will continue to grow. Independent garages are uniquely positioned to meet this demand, providing essential services that ensure vehicle longevity and safety.”
