More than 20m car journeys predicted over Bank holiday
More than 20 million car journeys are expected over the coming Bank Holiday, with four million on Friday, 24 May alone.
Traffic volumes are predicted to remain high throughout the weekend, with 3.7 million car trips on Saturday and 3.4 million on both Sunday and Monday.
Meanwhile, a further 5.7 million non-getaway car journeys are also anticipated throughout the weekend, taking the total to more than 20 million cars on the road.
According to a study carried out by the RAC and INRIX, the heaviest congestion will be on the M5 southbound, the M25, A14, M3 and A34.
RAC Breakdown spokesperson Alice Simpson said:
“Our research suggests this weekend could be the busiest of the year so far on the roads, with millions of people embarking on getaway trips to make the most of the three days and, for those with school-age children, the start of the half-term holiday. In fact, we’re looking at possible leisure traffic volumes returning to levels similar to what we last saw in 2019.”
