Petition launched to recognise ‘skilled’ HGV drivers
A new petition has been launched to recognise HGV drivers as skilled workers.
It is hoped this will attract more people to the industry and help address the skills shortage in the sector.
The petition is being led by driving recruitment specialist ARC, and it is hoping to attract enough signatures to get the issue discussed in parliament.
According to the Road Haulage Association, there is a shortfall of 60,000 HGV drivers, while 30,000 tests were lost last year alone because of Covid-19.
Adam Miller, operations director at ARC, said: “We need to attract new people to the industry and change people’s perceptions of a HGV driver. They are highly skilled, highly trained and should be recognised accordingly. We are urging people to sign our petition to get this discussed in parliament.”
