Ofgem turbo charges EV infrastructure

Ofgem has approved £300m of funding to upgrade electricity grids so they can support more EV chargers, including up to 1,800 ultra-rapid chargers than can replenish a battery in under 40 minutes.

The investment will see the additional chargers installed at more than 200 sites, including 39 motorway service areas, with 1,750 more charging points in towns and cities.

Ofgem boss Jonathan Brearley said: “This £300m down payment is just the start of building back a greener energy network which will see well over £40bn of investment in Britain’s energy networks in the next seven years.

“The payment will support the rapid take up of electric vehicles which will be vital if Britain is to hit its climate change targets. Drivers need to be confident that they can charge their car quickly when they need to.”
