Waymo launches driverless ride-hailing service

Members of the public in Phoenx, America can now hail an autonomous vehicle which doesn’t have a back-up driver behind the wheel.

The fully autonomous service is being introduced for a trial period by Waymo, which is the driverless vehicle unit of Google parent company Alphabet.

Customers can hail the vehicle for journeys with a 50 square mile region. The cars will complete the journey without anyone in the driver’s seat or watching remotely, ready to take over the wheel if necessary.

Waymo was providing a similar service about 5,000 times a week before coronavirus, although more than 90% of those journeys did include a back-up driver.
