MOT tests up 86% in June

More than 2.6 million drivers booked MOT tests last month rather than taking advantage of the six-month extension.

MOT tests became mandatory again from 1 August, but official figures show that a huge number of UK drivers put safety first to book tests.

A Freedom Of Information request made by Motorway.co.uk to the DVSA revealed that a total of 2,622,920 MOTs were carried out in June, up 86% on May figures.

MOT tests in June were also down just 21% on the corresponding month in 2019.

Alex Buttle, director of Motorway.co.uk, said: “MOTs almost doubled in June versus May, and were up just under two million on April, the month after the grace period was announced.

“It’s clear that people have chosen safety over short-term savings, and the peace of mind of knowing that their car is safe, mechanically sound and in the best condition to protect its ongoing value.”
