Plunkys All Stars charity match postponed

The charity match between Plunkys All Stars and Mercenaries FC scheduled to take next month at Peterborough United’s London Road ground has been postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The match was being held to raise money to support the Anthony Nolan charity, which was set up in 1974 to help people with blood cancer.

Anthony Nolan urgently needs to raise an additional £30,000 in every month that the coronavirus pandemic continues, to help fund an Emergency Handover Hub at Heathrow Airport, designed for international stem cell couriers who cannot enter UK hospitals due to quarantine rules. Anthony Nolan volunteers will collect the stem cells from the hub and complete the final lifesaving leg.

The fundraising appeal will also help cover the cost of increased testing for stem cell donors; and the rising need for patient services, including its patient helpline and patient grants.

Beatrix Passmore, senior community fundraising manager at Anthony Nolan, said: “Every penny raised will help us ensure lifesaving stem cells continue to reach those in desperate need of them, as well as helping to provide vital support to patients and their families at this difficult time.

“Fundraising is an essential part of our lifesaving work – the more money we raise, the more potential donors we can recruit onto the stem cell register, giving people in desperate need a second chance of life.”

Organiser Steve Plunkett has said the match will still go ahead at a later date, probably in May 2021.
