York announces plans to ban cars
York is planning to ban all private cars from the city centre within three years.
Councillors have approved plans to ban all non-essential car journeys within the city walls.
The City of York Council, which is run by the Liberal Democrats and the Greens, says this is part of a plan to make the city carbon neutral by 2030.
The idea was proposed by councillor Johnny Crawshaw.
He said: “People’s first response might be to be a bit anxious about what we’re proposing. That doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do. The public mood is changing, particularly in relation to climate change.”
