JLR awaits £500m investment go-ahead

Jaguar Land Rover will find out this week if plans to invest £500m on a new 30-acre site in Coventry have been given the green light.

The car manufacturer wants to build the battery-development site on Gateway North, according to reports in the Coventry Telegraph.

However, it is awaiting planning permission from the Council, which is due to announce its decision imminently.

It’s understood JLR wants to develop a new 645,000 sqft powertrain plant employing around 750 people. This would include space for design, engineering and vehicle testing.

Also, a new two-storey centre is proposed along with a 16,000 sqft fuel farm building to the south west of the building and a 13,000 sqft electricity substation.

The officers’ report to the planning committee states: ‘Jaguar Land Rover are the largest private employer in Coventry and Warwickshire and their continued success and growth is important for the area.’

‘The proposals will enable the expansion of a major employer within the city to expand their international headquarters and facilitate widespread economic benefits. The element of the proposal falling within the greenbelt is considered to be justified by very special circumstances and the development is appropriately mitigated.’

‘The proposals are not considered to have a detrimental impact on highway safety, visual amenities or be harmful to the environment and ecology and the application is recommended for approval.’
