Farmers able to hail tractors
Vehicle manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s number one utility vehicle (UV) manufacturer, has launched an app called Trringo which enables farmers in Karnataka to hire tractors at an hourly rate.
Tractors can be hired for around 400-700 rupees (£5) and will also be available via call centre as many areas of rural India do not have internet access
There are currently 20 hubs across Karnataka and one hub in Maharashtra where tractors and drivers are sent from. The company plans to expand its services to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in the not so distant future.
Rajesh Jejurikar, chief executive of Mahindra & Mahindra said, the current hiring model took ‘a toll on the self-esteem of the farmer’, adding many felt they had ‘to beg for it’.
The company also hopes to offer other farming equipment for hire in the future as well.
Founded in 1947, Mahindra & Mahindra has remained the number one UV supplier in India since its launch. Its vehicles are now available in 70 countries across the world with a range of vehicles that covers almost anything you can take on the road plus more, including heavy commercial vehicles as well as small electric vehicles.
