DFT considers roadworks reform

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin is considering proposals to extend penalties on unnecessary disruption caused by roadworks.

Under the proposals being considered, councils and utility companies would be fined £5,000 a day for roadworks that needlessly inconveniences motorists by being left unattended. Similar charges are also being considered for temporary traffic lights left behind.

The rules being considered would be for local A roads, which have their maintenance managed by councils. If passed, the changes would either see roadworks lifted on days when work is not being done, or to continue through weekends.

At present, councils are fined £5,000 for each day roadwork schemes overrun.

In a statement, Mr. McLoughlin said, ‘I want to deliver better journeys for drivers. Roadworks can be essential, but that doesn’t mean they should be in place any longer than is absolutely necessary. That is why I am looking at proposals to reduce queues and make drivers’ lives easier.’
