Tesla recalls Model S

USA Today reports that Tesla Motors has issued a recall for all 90,000 of the Model S sedans it’s ever produced to fix a potential defect in front seat belts.

According to the report, the Silicon Valley automaker said the luxury electric vehicle could have a seat belt ‘that was not properly connected to the outboard lap pre-tensioner.’ The problem surfaced when a Model S owner in Europe reported an issue.

‘This vehicle was not involved in a crash and there were no injuries. However, in the event of a crash, a seatbelt in this condition would not provide full protection,’ Tesla told car owners in an email.

The company will inspect the Model S for free to ensure the seat belts are safe and will deliver a fix if necessary, though it noted that after examining 3,000 so far technicians have ‘found no issues’.

The seat-belt recall is voluntary.

The Model S earned the maximum five-star safety rating from NHTSA.
