DIY vehicle repairs on the increase amidst cost of living crisis

New research has found that more drivers are turning to social media for advice on how to carry out DIY vehicle repairs to save money.

According to experts at temporary car insurance provider Tempcover, which surveyed 2,000 UK motorists, the cost of living crisis is driving more and more people to attempt DIY fixes instead of booking their vehicles in for a professional service.

The survey revealed that 90% of drivers aged between 35 and 44 have turned to social media platform for vehicle advice and online guides. This compares to 40% of people over the age of 65.

Meanwhile, 76% of men have said they use online platforms such as TikTok and YouTube to help them with DIY car repairs compared to 73% of women.

The research also revealed that 25% of those surveyed admitted they have attempted DIY vehicle repairs to avoid paying a professional, 18% have attempted repairs after an MOT failure, 28% said they continued driving their cars after an MOT failure, and 15% have delayed or skipped an MOT test due to financial concerns.

Claire Wills-Mckissick from Tempcover said:We understand financial pressures are leading many UK drivers to DIY car repairs. While this may seem like a saving, it can create safety risks; ignoring advisories or delaying essential repairs could result in dangerous issues going unnoticed, putting not only yourself but also your loved ones and others at risk.

“Having a valid MOT is a legal requirement, and improper repairs can lead to bigger costs, potentially resulting in an even more expensive garage visit than you were trying to avoid. Motorists should seek professional advice if uncertain about repairs.”
