The 2025 IMI Skills Competitions have now been launched with a deadline of 28 March for initial nominations.

Nominations are invited in four categories: automotive technology, automotive body repair, automotive refinishing and heavy vehicle technology.

The competitions are open to anyone studying a Level 3 apprenticeship, or those who have completed one within the last 12 months.

The first round requires employers and centres to nominate entrants who complete an online quiz, before the top scorers are invited to take an online knowledge test to gain a place in the National Qualifiers which will take place around the UK in May and June.

The top six competitors in each skill area will then be invited to take part in training days in preparation for the practical Live finals in November. Following the final, some of the finalists if they are age-eligible, may have the opportunity to progress on to Team UK for the biannual WorldSkills International competition.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee Tool has been named as headline sponsor for the 2025 Skills Competitions.

Head of transport Martin Bryers said: “We pride ourselves on taking the time to work alongside the professionals we serve to understand the demands of a constantly changing workplace. By doing so, we deliver solutions that help them work faster and smarter, overcoming real jobsite challenges.

“As the sponsor of this year’s IMI Skills Competitions, we are empowering the next generation of automotive professionals, accelerating their career paths and showcasing the opportunities open to all.”

The IMI has also partnered with Automechanika Birmingham for Motorvate and will be hosting a skills competition showcase, where the next generation of talent will demonstrate their skills.
