Used electric vehicles save drivers up to £1,600

Used electric vehicles could save their owners up to £1,600 a year, according to new analysis carried out by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) think tank.

The research considered the cost of ownership of the six best-selling used EVs in the UK since early 2023. It took into account purchasing prices, charging, and maintenance costs.

With prices of EVs tumbling as manufacturers strive to meet ZEV Mandate targets, it found that the average annual savings of the most popular used EVs compared to petrol equivalents was £1,600.

The Audi e-tron recorded the largest annual saving of £2,600, with the Renault Zoe saving owners about £875 a year.

ECIU transport analyst Colin Walker said: “Increasing numbers of regular families are now trading in for an EV on the second-hand market, taking advantage of the hundreds of pounds of savings they can generate every year, and turning their backs on paying the ‘petrol premium’ of their old car.

“The increasing number of new EVs being sold today will hit the used market in around three to four years’ time, opening up the opportunity for cheaper and cleaner electric driving to the majority of people, as most people buy their cars second-hand.”
