Ten car models tipped for extinction in EV revolution

A new study has identified the 10 car models likely to go extinct first as a result of the electrification of the UK car parc.

According to research carried out by online car parts marketplace Ovoko, the Hyundai Coupe is the car expected to reach zero registrations first.

Based on sales data from YouGov, it will reach this stage on 28 August 2026.

Meanwhile, the Renault Megane has been given an extinction date of 7 July 2029, followed by the Ford Mondeo (24 May 2033), Renault Scenic (13 January 2034), and Ford Ka (18 February 2035).

Also included in the top 10 is the Toyota Avensis (19 August 2037), the Audi A2 (28 February 2046), the Kia Carens (10 January 2049), the Mazda 6 (18 April 2049), and the Jeep Cherokee (3 June 2050).

Vytas Palovis, vice president of growth at Ovoko, said: “Petrol and diesel car models are facing a swift decline as the automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles. With increasing regulatory pressures, stricter emissions standards, and growing consumer demand for eco-friendly options, many traditional fuel-powered cars are likely to see a critical drop in registrations in the coming years and some models may become extinct altogether.

“Many of these models have become icons, representing decades of automotive design, engineering milestones, and a sense of nostalgia that can’t be replaced by modern alternatives. It is bittersweet to witness the gradual extinction of cars that have left such a lasting imprint on driving culture.”
