SMMT responds to ZEV Mandate commitment from government

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has said it will work with the UK government to identify any necessary adjustments to ZEV Mandate targets.

Vehicle manufacturers met government officials this week to consider the challenges posed by the ZEV Mandate, which stipulates that 22% of new cars sold this year must be electric.

The ratio rises to 100% by 2030, with vehicle manufacturers labelling this as outdated and warning that it threatens both UK jobs and future investment in the UK automotive industry.

The government has said it will be flexible around the electrification of the UK car parc, but that the 2030 deadline will not be changed.

ZEV Mandate

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “The discussion with Ministers was an important opportunity to restate the UK automotive industry’s commitment to both economic growth and net zero. However, the industry also made clear its concerns about the pace of the EV transition and the negative effect this is having on the health of the overall market and the attractiveness of the UK as a manufacturing location.

“A strong market and manufacturing base that sustains jobs and drives growth requires workable regulation backed by support for consumers – fiscal incentives and confidence that the charging network will be there when it is needed. We will now work urgently with government to identify any adjustments necessary to help the industry and government meet their targets, instilling confidence in the consumer and other stakeholders, all of whom are part of this transition.”
