Police seize over 200,000 vehicles

More than a quarter of a million vehicles were taken off UK roads last year.

According to a new Freedom of Information request by National Scrap Car, 214,051 cars were seized by police forces during 2023 based on information from 23 of 45 police forces.

The cars were seized for a number of reasons including no road tax or car insurance, driving without a licence, or if the car was stolen or involved in a crime.

In 59% of cases the cars were later returned to their owners despite the cost of reclaiming your vehicle increasing to £192 last April, while 17% were destroyed and six per cent sold at auction.

Most vehicles were seized in Dundee (23,344), followed by the West Midlands (23,203), Greater Manchester (22,317) and West Yorkshire (20,124).
