esure backs 20mph zones to lower motor premiums
A leading UK insurer has backed proposals to introduce 20mph zones in UK cities, arguing that it would lead to a £50 reduction in annual insurance premiums.
The Welsh government introduced 20mph zones last September. The new Labour government has recently said it would support the introduction of similar restrictions throughout the UK.
Insurer esure has backed the announcement after reporting a 20% fall in car claims in Wales since the limit was introduced. It lowered premiums as a result and believes drivers elsewhere in the UK could also benefit from a reduction in premiums if local authorities elsewhere in the UK impose similar restrictions.
Chief customer officer Peter Martin-Simon said:
“We are already seeing the benefits in places where 20mph speed limits have been introduced. Not only does this make roads safer for drivers and pedestrians, but an extension would also materially reduce the number of car accidents, as well as the severity and cost of those accidents. Within three months of us identifying a new 20mph zone, we will proactively reduce policy prices for customers like we have already done in Wales.”
