Diesel options fall to lowest level since 2015
The number of diesel models available in the UK has fallen to its lowest level since 2015, according to research carried out by CarGurus.
It found that the choice of new diesel models now on sale has declined by over two-thirds (68%) since 2015, with just 65 options available from the 30 main manufacturers compared to the 202 that were on sale in 2015.
Meanwhile, SMMT car registration data has revealed that diesel model sales fell to just 5.6% of the market last year compared to 48.5% in 2015, with unit sales tumbling from 1,276,871 to 71,501.
However, the SMMT also reported a slight revival in September, when diesel sales rose by 17.1%, or 1,367 units, year on year.
Chris Knapman, editorial director at CarGurus U.K., said:
“Despite the choice of new diesel vehicles having dwindled in recent years, for some drivers it remains the preferred fuel choice. The good news is that there is still a huge selection of diesel vehicles on the used market.”
