Chinese brand Chery considers UK manufacturing option

Chinese car manufacturer Chery could begin making cars in the UK.

Chery is already planning to manufacture vehicles in Spain and has now said it will expand its footprint as it aims to enhance its presence in the European market.

The company was set up in 1997 and is now among China’s largest car manufacturers and its largest exporter. It has established two brands, Omoda and Jaecoo, which are entirely dedicated to the international market.

Omada launched in the UK last month with both petrol and electric models, and is already supported by 60 dealerships. The company aims to increase that to more than 100 by the end of the year.

Models for sale in Europe are currently produced in Chery’s manufacturing site in Wuhu. However, it has announced a ‘localised’ approach which could see plants created across Europe. It is already committed to a site in Barcelona, and earlier this year said it was considering another site in the UK.

UK head Victor Zhang said:

“For the UK, we are evaluating. To be honest, we are open for all options and opportunities. So I think it’s just a matter of time. If everything is ready, we will do it.”
