Automotive skills gap could be plugged by interns
The automotive skills gap could be partly plugged by an army of interns ready and waiting to join the industry, according to Autotech Academy.
It said it has up to 1,000 students ready and waiting to enter the sector.
This comes after data from the National Franchise Dealers Association (NFDA) revealed that 82% of dealers cite ‘technician’ as the most role most impacted by the skills shortage.
Autotech Academy has already placed 200 interns at dealerships in the past three years, each of whom have been individually screened and supplied with ‘comprehensive tool kit’ to prepare them for a career in the sector.
It added that more than 90% of interns are offered permanent positions after completing the internship.
Automotive skills gap
James Mackay, managing director of Autotech Academy, said: “Our internship initiative not only addresses the industry’s skills shortage but also provides dealerships with a reliable, risk-free way to grow their own talent.
“We have been delighted by the industry’s confidence in our approach, and have worked strategically with dealer groups, to customise our offering and meet their exact needs. While it’s great that 200 interns have been placed, there are still many newly qualified automotive students waiting for job opportunities and the industry cannot afford to lose them.”
