AA poll finds 16% of drivers could be invalidating insurance

A poll carried out by the AA has revealed that 16% of drivers who use their personal cars for business trips have not told their insurers.

A further six per cent said they could not remember if they had informed their insurance provider or not.

While most insurance policies will cover drivers for their regular commute, those who use their personal cars for multiple site visits are unlikely to be covered by a standard policy and would need to upgrade it to include business use.

Meanwhile, three quarters of respondents to the AA survey of 1,855 grey fleet drivers said they had told their insurers they were using their personal cars for business trips, although 16% admitted they had underestimated the number of miles driven.

Gus Park, managing director of AA Insurance Services, said:

“Some drivers who use their own cars for regular off-site business trips are running the risk of not being covered should the worst happen. Adding business use to your policy is a small task, but can make a big difference. If you regularly travel to see customers or attend conferences, it is really important to make sure your policy is fit for purpose.”
