Smart motorways get green light

Nine more sections of smart motorways have been approved in the UK, totalling a further 138 miles.

The new all-lane running (ALR) smart motorways have been approved for sections of the M3, M6 and M1.

This comes despite widespread safety concerns after 44 people have lost their lives on smart motorways in the last five years.

Further, these new sections will not meet the government’s own safety guidelines. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced an 18-point plan earlier this year which included the recommendation that lay-bys should be no more than a mile apart. However, it’s understood that gaps on these new stretches will range from 1.04 and 1.39 miles.
