Showrooms pencil in June date to reopen

Showrooms and car dealers could reopen from 1 June, under new government guidelines.

Assuming public health criteria have been met and coronavirus infections continue to decline, a gradual lifting of lockdown measures could see dealerships open their doors again within weeks as car retailers are included in the first wave of non-essential businesses that can reopen.

That could kickstart a busy month, with What Car? finding that nearly one-in-five in-market buyers are looking to purchase after the Covid-19 lockdown lifts.

Rachael Prasher, managing director of What Car?, said: “We know from our weekly online audience surveys that nearly one in five car buyers are preparing to purchase a new car when showrooms reopen. That pent-up demand is great news for under-pressure retailers and manufacturers.”
