Nissan secures future of Sunderland site

Nissan has given a vote of confidence to its Sunderland plant by confirming core production will remain in the north east as part of its transformation policy.

Its understood production will increase in Sunderland, while Nissan’s plant in Barcelona will close.

President and CEO Makoto Uchida said: “We will maintain core manufacturing in Sunderland and also improve efficiencies. We considered various measures in Barcelona and although it was a very difficult decision we intend to close the plant.”

Nissan employs 6,700 people at its Sunderland site. It did not comment on whether improving efficiencies would result in job losses.
