EV sales surge to 13% market share

Electric vehicle sales in Europe surged in January to claim a 13 per cent of market share compared to 7.1 per cent for the same month last year.

Total EV registrations jumped from 87,100 to 150,100, a rise of 72 per cent.

All EV types contributed to growth as hybrids (HEV) increased their volume by 36 per cent, pure electric (BEV) by 91 per cent and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) by 173 per cent. For the first time, the hybrids counted for less than half of total EV registrations.

Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics, said: “Europe demonstrated that the widespread adoption of EVs is increasingly feasible, and will become a likely reality once the cars become more affordable.”

EVs made up 77 per cent of total car registrations in Norway, 38 per cent in Sweden and 28 per cent in Finland. Among the big markets, EVs counted for almost 19 per cent in France, 14 per cent in the UK, 12 per cent in Spain, 10 per cent in Germany and eight per cent in Italy.
