Electric scooters now legal on UK roads

Electric scooters became legal on UK roads for the first time on Saturday.

This comes after the government fast-tracked and broadened trials in an attempt to provide a new, greener travel solution.

Under new laws, users can travel up to 15.5mph on rented e-scooters along roads, cycle tracks, and bike lanes but not pavements or motorways. The scooters must be covered by a motor vehicle insurance policy by the renting company, while users must be over 16 and have a driving license of some description, either full or provisional.

The scooters are already in use in some parts of the country, such as the south coast, the Midlands and part of the south-west, but any local authority is invited to initiate their own trials.
