TWI to deliver new training modules

TWI Ltd is leading a European project consortium to create training modules for a harmonised standard of qualification in the car body repair sector.

The CARBOREP project, which has been co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme, plans to create a curriculum and examination for training European Car Body Repair Technicians in processes such as welding, mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding.

TWI has been joined by the European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF), Asociación Española de Soldadura y Tecnologías de Unión (CESOL), and Instituto de Soldadura e Qualidade (ISQ) to deliver the project, with the intention of addressing skills shortages and meeting labour needs across Europe.

The curriculum is in the final stages of its development and, although its ultimate aim is the repair rather than replacement of vehicles, it maintains a focus on the work being done to a recognised standard to ensure safety, while potentially reducing the waste of resources associated with writing off cars following accidents.

The training looks set to interest stakeholders such as car manufacturers, insurance companies, repair garages, national and international bodies and associations for automotive repair and vocational training providers.

CARBOREP should increase the transparency of competences and qualifications for the automotive sector, while allowing the movement of repair specialists across Europe.

TWI is planning to host a free Pilot Seminar, in conjunction with the Association for Welding, Fabrication, Training and Education (AWFTE), in Middlesbrough on 17 May 2019. The aim of this event will be to provide insight into the course background, curriculum and training materials.
