Former VW boss charged over dieselgate

Five senior officials at Volkswagen during the emissions scandal, including former chief executive Martin Winterkorn, face prison after being charged in Germany with fraud.

Martin Winterkorn has been accused of not telling authorities or drivers about the manipulation of diesel emissions, as well as approving software updates designed to conceal the true reason for higher emission levels.

Prosecutors claim he knew about the software in May 2014 but claimed he only found out about it in September 2015.

If found guilty, the 71-year-old faces up to 10 years in jail.

The other four officials have not been named.
