Chancellor urged to freeze fuel duty

The Chancellor has been urged to freeze fuel duty in his Spring Statement.

FairFuelUK has urged Philip Hammond to recognise the positive impact, UK’s 37 million drivers make to the economy when he delivers his statement tomorrow.

In FairFuelUK’s latest survey, nine out of 10 responders want a cut in Fuel Duty. In response, it has repeated the motorists’ long-term call to the Chancellor to cut fuel duty in the lifetime of this parliament, set up an independent PumpWatch body, allocate significantly more investment in roads infrastructure and produce a Long-Term Roads Transport Plan.

Douglas Ross MP for Moray and new chair of the APPG for FairFuel for Motorists and Hauliers said, ‘It’s right that we recognise this Conservative government has kept fuel duty frozen. This is a major issue in the Moray area I represent, and across the UK.  While freezing fuel duty has been important, there is still more the government can do to support drivers, as our fuel remains one of the highest taxed anywhere in the world.’

Robert Halfon MP for Harlow, chairman of the Education Select Committee and vice chair of the APPG for FairFuel said, ‘The Chancellor has kept fuel duty frozen, but he could really end the war on motorists by making fuel duty lower, and ensuring fair prices at the pump, via a PumpWatch regulator, to stop greedy oil companies taking motorists for fuels, even when the international oil price falls.’

Quentin Willson, TV motoring journalist and FairFuelUK campaigner said: ‘Demonising half the electorate because they depend on personal mobility isn’t politically wise or fair. Those 37 million drivers have no choice.’

Howard Cox, founder of the FairFuelUK campaign said: ‘The continuing fiscal exploitation of the easiest of cash cows irritates drivers greatly. It’s why our politicos must learn quickly that our motoring economy is teetering on more than an uncertain technological and tax funding future, it’s being steadily destroyed by out of touch and highly financed ignoramuses advising our Government for pure political gain.’
