MOT analysis highlights failures

Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment faults are the main reason for first time MOT failures according to MyCarNeedsA.com.

The MOT price comparison site analysed a total of 29,640,484 MOT records from the Vehicle Operator and Services Agency (VOSA – 2015) to identify the reasons for failure for the vehicles undergoing their first MOT.

Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment came out top with responsibility for 80,026 failures (19%). Brakes were responsible for 59,133 failures (14%), whilst suspension was the cause of 53,322 failures (12%). Body structure and general items    resulted in 22,566 failures (five per cent).

Scott Hamilton, managing director of MyCarNeedsA.com commented, ‘The good news is that our research shows the majority of MOT failures can be fixed quickly and cheaply by motorists, before they book their vehicle in for an MOT. Many of these faults can be picked up by regular maintenance and can be detected by the owner, by a very simple walk-around inspection of the car.’

MyCarNeedsA.com now works with 4,000 dealers, garage and workshop partners nationwide.
