VW planning double-digit job cuts
Volkswagen plans to cut more than 10,000 jobs as it switches to green technology.
That number could rise to 25,000 in the next decade as workers retire.
Head of human resources Karlheinz Blessing told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, ‘It’s not about dismantling a few hundred jobs. Over the years, it will amount to a five-digit figure around the world.’
However, he insisted there would be no forced dismissals.
VW employs more than 620,000 people worldwide. It plans to develop and manufacture more than 30 electric vehicles by 2025, but the assembly of electric vehicles requires fewer workers than combustion engines.
Meanwhile, the European Commission is understood to have expressed fears that the VW’s ‘fix’ following dieselgate could damage the cars’ engines.
It’s been reported their concerns are based on feedback from an emissions laboratory in Italy.
