The majority (57%) of AA members with school-age children claim ‘traffic chaos’ during the school run.
As a result, the AA is backing Walk to School Week in a bid to reduce the traffic congestion outside schools. Already as many as three in every 50 schoolchildren in the north join a ‘walking bus’ to get them safely to and from school, while cutting the number of cars on the road.
The AA survey also found 40% of AA members with school-age children said the schools actively encourage the children to walk, 25% have access to a schoolbus, 18% say their schools actively encourage children to cycle to school and 17% say their school actively discourages parents from dropping the children off by car.
For 13% of the 3,774 AA members with pupils surveyed, their schools have set up an effective traffic management system at the start and end of the school day.
