Honda and Waymo in talks
Honda is in discussions to supply vehicles to Waymo, Google’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary.
Waymo only became an independent company a week ago but the deal continues the trend of carmakers and tech companies partnering up in the development of autonomous vehicles; in May Google agreed to add its technology to Fiat Chrysler’s minivans.
Honda has tie-ups with tech startups such as south east Asian ride-hailing service Grab, and has been working independently to develop cars that can drive by themselves on highways.
Honda spokesman Teruhiko Tatebe told Reuters, ‘There’s only so much technology a company can develop while focusing on one specific approach. By approaching it from multiple angles it’s possible to come up with new innovations quicker.’
