EV sales in Norway top 100,000
Norway has become the fourth country to register more than 100,000 electric vehicles – and the trend is only increasing.
With a population of just over five million people, that figure represents a success story for the country’s approach to electric vehicles.
At the end of 2010 there were just 3,366 electric vehicles registers in the country. That number had swollen to 50,000 in April last year but indications are that growth is only set to escalate. More than 17,000 electric vehicles have been sold in the country this year and during March roughly one in three new sales was an electric car.
The surge in the last year has been attributed to governmental incentives coupled with sales of Tesla’s Model S and Nissan Leafs.
In total, about 25% of Norway’s market is now plug-in electric vehicles.
The global leader in electric sales in the US with about 450,000 (about one per cent of market). China has around 300,000 electric units on its roads and Japan has about 150,000.
