16 people charged over injury claims
The Independent.ie reports that 10 men and six women will appear today before Cork District Court at Anglesea Street following a major Garda investigation called ‘Operation Nascar’.
The investigation was launched following suspicions about organised motor insurance fraud revolving around personal injury and motor damage claims.
The operation was launched in 2012 and resulted in multiple arrests over the past three years.
All the arrests occurred in the Munster area.
The arrests to date were made under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
‘Operation Nascar’ was led by the organised crime and fraud investigation unit at Anglesea Street Garda Station with the support of detectives in four counties.
It was launched following the receipt of complaints from insurance firms and motor dealers amid suspicions that some traffic accidents which resulted in injuries may have been staged.
It remains unclear whether the matter will be dealt with by the district court or by judge and jury in the circuit court.
